Society Wins LHC Award for ‘Ideal & Real’ Exhibition

The Society was honored with a 2004 Award for Excellence from the Lower Hudson Conference of Historical Agencies & Museums (LHC). The award, for the exhibition and educational program "The Ideal and The Real", was presented at LHC's October 12 annual meeting and awards ceremony at the Wallace Center of the F.D.R. Library in Hyde Park, NY.

LHC called the exhibition, curated by Education Director Susan Kaufman, "an imaginatively presented, hands-on exhibit with a solid experiential lesson in 19th century American life. A wonderful educational tool that challenges visitors to think about how they live today. "

Susan, Executive Director Cindy Krossman and Administrative Assistant Laura Cavataio attended the ceremony, at which LHC gave awards for excellence in a number of categories, including preservation and restoration, publications, educational programs and exhibitions. Susan said: "It was an honor to receive this award and to share the day with our fellow 'history keepers'. "

LHC is the umbrella organization that supports historical agencies and museums in Westchester and Rock-land Counties and New York City. It was formed to advance and advocate the preservation and interpretation of the area's historic, ethnic and cultural heritages by promoting professional standards of excellence and fostering cooperation among its members.

Our Historic Buildings are Getting a "Facelift"

If you've come to the Society during the past few moths, you've seen workers busily replacing the roofs and repairing the exteriors of our two historic buildings, the Cudner-Hyatt House and the 1828 Quaker Meeting House.

The roofing on both buildings is now fire-retardant cedar shake shingles. Research on this was done by architect Michael Devonshire, AI A, a historic preservation consultant; permission to use the cedar shingles was granted by the Board of Architectural Review.

You may be surprised to see that the QMH is now gray! A great deal of research by our Restoration subcommittee, Barbara Shay MacDonald, Mimi Sherman and Bill and Linda Blair Doescher, went into choosing the paint colors for both buildings. They consulted Quaker Advisory Board members Mickey Singsen and John Laughlin, who said that Meeting Houses were usually gray, with black shutters. This was confirmed by Gardiner Angell, a long-time Scarsdale resident, historian and architect. The color scheme for the Cudner-Hyatt House, white with dark green shutters, was researched by Mimi, who used photos from our collections and the original 1976 Historic Structures Report by architect Henry Lockwood. The Cudner-Hyatt House will be painted next Spring.
